Henry VIII

Henry VIII ruled from 1509 to 1547, is famous (or infamous) for his six wives, the break with Rome and his opulence.

Henry VIII's marriage his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, had Henry in doubts about its Christian legitimacy from before it began. He eventually got a Papal dispensation to enable him to marry his late brother's widow, but the issue of the validity of this would later be central to his attempts to divorce Catherine.
